And in some workplaces, where seniority is rewarded over competence, the low man on the totem pole can be doing the best quality work but getting only a fraction of the pay of the clock-puncher who's been around for years simply because of the difference in the date of hire. You don't need me to tell you that's a raw deal.
Inattentive employers are fooled into thinking busywork means things are getting accomplished. The shuffling of papers, moving around the work floor, pointless meetings. These things add up to getting the job done for unimaginative bosses.
The favorite saying of bad labor managers everywhere is "If you've got time to lean, you've got time to clean." That says it all. That sums up what they think work is. If it doesn't result in rushing around like a chicken with its head cut off it must not be work.
These bosses don't have the vision to see that employees might be using their minds to come up with a more productive way to work. They would rather see you sweeping an already clean floor instead of thinking up designs for a more efficient broom. Don't slip into this way of thinking, and don't continue working for someone who does. These people confuse ACTivity with PRODUCTivity. Thinking like this produces a colossal time drain, and your time is too valuable to waste.

Do you get paid by the hour? Why? Why not get paid by the amount of work you do? That's your true value, what you're able to produce for the company.
Lots of employers without vision prefer the money-for-time method of compensation because if every worker got paid what he was worth they wouldn't be able to afford the employees with the highest output.
Think about the days you came into work and were lazy, maybe only giving it half of what you were capable of. It happens from time to time to almost everybody. Now compare those times with the days you kicked ass and did twice as much as you had planned on doing. If you got the same amount of pay for both days, you're getting screwed in the long run.
If that doesn't seem unreasonable to you, maybe you should reconsider. There are certain employees whose default mode is half-assed. They do only enough just to get by. Then you have the superstars, the ones who consistently knock it out of the park. Do both of these people add the same amount of value to your team? According to the boss's pay scale they do. Now you see how unreasonable simply trading money for time is.
If you get paid the same amount for surfing the net and hiding in the bathroom (time wasted) as you do for busting ass and saving the day (time invested), then how is that fair to you or your paymaster? Wouldn't you prefer that on the days when there's nothing to do at your job you get to go home and spend your time as you see fit rather than just counting down the hours? Better yet, how about if you complete whatever assigned tasks you have for that day in three hours instead of eight then you get paid the same amount and you still get that extra five hours to go home and spend your time as you see fit? I'm sure that sounds way more reasonable to you.
Quitting your job will give you that gain in leisure time if that's what you so desire. Even better, it will also give you more time to work. That's right. You don't want to quit working. You want to quit your job so you can do real work.
You can focus your time in pursuit of income in a manner you see fit, and there's no cap on how much time you can put into it once you quit your job. The more you want to work the more productive you'll be and the more you'll earn. Any employer who crabs about paying you for overtime certainly isn't going to encourage you to burn the midnight oil if it benefits you more than him.
To get paid for face time instead of results is to get the short end of the stick. The most important step in building your wealth is to quit your job. You'll never get rich working for someone else.
